Do you know how to avoid distractions while driving?

On Behalf of | Nov 10, 2017 | Car Accidents

Each second you spend on the roads in the Lake Charles area is one that may change your life forever. Car accidents happen all the time, especially when distractions are involved. In 2015, 3,477 people lost their lives to motor vehicle crashes where distractions were present, states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many drivers believe they are good drivers. Those same individuals use distractions to keep them interested in the task of driving.

No matter how good your driving skills are, do not engage in activities that require you to remove some of your attention from the roads. You risk injuring or killing yourself or someone else. Before you get behind the steering wheel again, take some time to review the following safety suggestions.

Put excess items away

You may need your cellphone for emergency situations and to keep your friends and family informed about your whereabouts. You do not need to keep it in your lap on in your hands while you drive. Keep your cellphone and other mobile devices in your glove compartment, driver’s console or somewhere else where it will not be easily accessible for you to use when you are sitting at a red light or cruising in traffic.

Limit passenger conversations

You may not think your passengers are distracting, but they can be. Try to limit your conversations so you do not become distracted or preoccupied with other matters than the task at hand. If you need to adjust the controls or features in your vehicle, ask your passengers to do it for you.

Preoccupy children

Children are a major source of distractions for many parents when they are driving. Before you travel with your kids, make sure they are prepared for the ride. Pack a bag with things to keep them occupied. If you must interact with your kids or babies while driving, pull over to the side of the road in a safe area before tending to their needs.

Distractions on the road can change your life in ways that you do not want to imagine. Play it safe and use good judgment and driving skills. Do not forget to take measures to reduce the number of distractions that may tempt you while you drive.
